Fit testing is a critical part of workplace safety in environments where employees are exposed to airborne hazards. Under WorkSafeBC regulations, employers must ensure that workers using tight-fitting respirators receive proper fit testing to confirm a secure and effective seal.
There are two main types of fit testing: qualitative (taste or smell-based) and quantitative (measurement-based). Both methods ensure the respirator fits the individual’s facial structure and provides the intended protection. Fit tests must be performed:
- Before an employee first uses a respirator
- Whenever a different mask model or size is introduced
- At least once every 12 months
Employers are also responsible for training staff on correct respirator use and documenting all fit test results. Compliance not only protects workers but also reduces the risk of fines and legal issues.
